Is the CFA worth it in 2026?
Yes — if you are targeting equity research, asset management, or buy-side roles. The CFA Charter is still the single most-recognised post-graduate credential in investment management globally. Cost is significant (~£2,500-3,500 across three levels), time-to-completion is 2.5-4 years, and prep providers (Kaplan Schweser, Wiley, Mark Meldrum, CFI) make or break your pass rates. For pure corporate finance or IB roles, an MBA still tends to outweigh the CFA — pick by where you actually want to work.
Best for: aspiring portfolio managers, equity analysts, buy-side researchers. Skip if: you want corporate strategy or pure IB — an MBA or CPA may be a better return.

CFA Program (Chartered Financial Analyst) — CFA Institute
Built for aspiring or working investment analysts, portfolio managers and equity researchers aiming for the gold-standard investment credential — not a casual weekend course. You work through three sequential exam levels covering ethics, quantitative methods, economics, financial statement analysis, corporate finance, equity, fixed income, derivatives, alternative investments and portfolio management. CFA Institute’s own estimate is roughly 300 hours of study per level, self-paced, with exams offered four times a year. As of the 2026 exams, the one-time enrollment fee was dropped, leaving just the per-level registration fee: roughly £858 early / £1,122 standard per level (paid in USD, $1,140/$1,490), so three levels run approximately £2,650-£3,460 total. Recommend only to those genuinely committed to a multi-year investment career — the workload and cost are serious.
FMVA — Financial Modeling & Valuation Analyst — CFI
Aimed at aspiring financial analysts and FP&A, investment banking or private equity hopefuls who want practical Excel modeling skills rather than exam theory. You build three-statement models, DCF and LBO models, and full company valuations from scratch across a required course sequence. CFI’s own FAQ says most learners finish in 3-6 months studying 8-10 hours a week, self-paced. Certifications aren’t sold individually — you need an all-access membership, which runs £374/yr for Self-Study (full price $497, current sale price $397.60) or £638/yr for Full-Immersion with 1:1 guidance and an AI tutor (full price $847, current sale $677.60). Strong pick for hands-on modeling skill, and the membership also unlocks 250+ other CFI courses.
Investment Foundations Certificate — CFA Institute
Designed for complete beginners to finance — students, career-changers, or non-investment staff at financial firms who need broad literacy without the CFA’s technical depth. Coverage spans markets, ethics, financial statements and portfolio management basics at an introductory level. It requires roughly 60-90 hours of self-paced study, a fraction of the CFA Program’s workload. The fee is flat and low by comparison: a single $350 registration covering both curriculum access and the exam, or approximately £264. Recommend this as a genuinely low-stakes entry point before committing to the far larger time and money investment of the full CFA Program — it lets you test interest in the field first.
3-Statement Modeling — CFI (required FMVA course)
For anyone starting financial modeling from zero, whether or not you plan to complete the full FMVA. You build a fully linked income statement, balance sheet and cash flow statement in Excel from scratch, learning how the three statements drive each other — the single most tested skill in junior finance interviews. CFI lists the course runtime as 6 hours 30 minutes, verified directly against its own live course catalog. Access requires a CFI Self-Study or Full-Immersion membership (from £374/yr) rather than a standalone purchase, since CFI doesn’t sell individual courses separately. Worth doing on its own merits even if you never touch the rest of FMVA — it’s the highest-leverage single course on the platform for interview prep.
Introduction to Business Valuation — CFI (required FMVA course)
Built for analysts who need to value companies — investment banking, private equity and equity research all lean on this skill constantly. The course covers comparable company analysis, precedent transaction analysis, and DCF fundamentals, verified at 6 hours 30 minutes on CFI’s current course catalog. Like all CFI courses, it’s bundled into the Self-Study (£374/yr) or Full-Immersion (£638/yr) membership rather than sold on its own. Recommend pairing this directly with 3-Statement Modeling — between the two, you cover the large majority of technical questions asked in junior analyst interviews, which is a better return on study time than working through FMVA’s full elective list.
CIPM Program (Certificate in Investment Performance Measurement) — CFA Institute
A narrower path than the full CFA, aimed specifically at performance analysts, GIPS compliance staff and portfolio reporting professionals rather than generalist investment roles. The two-level program covers performance measurement, attribution, GIPS Standards and risk analytics, with exams offered in March and September. There’s no separate enrollment fee, unlike the CFA Program — just a per-level registration fee of roughly £433 early / £583 standard (paid in USD, $575/$775), putting both levels together at approximately £866-1,166. Recommend this specifically for people targeting performance-measurement or compliance-reporting roles, not as a cheaper substitute for the CFA charter — the two credentials open different doors.
